Yes, Starbucks has arrived in Durban, South Africa and I couldn’t be happier about it. The launch party was on November 21st and the opening was on November 25th. Sadly, I wasn’t able to attend the launch party because I was not invited. Nevertheless, I did end up going to get a cup of the famous coffee this past Saturday, December 2nd.
Can I just say how excited I was to actually get to drink a cup of coffee from Starbucks! I was literally screaming internally, while standing in the queue to go inside. I would have screamed out loud, but people would have thought I was crazy and I wouldn’t have been allowed into the coffee shop to get a taste of the world-famous coffee.
Let’s talk about the decor, shall we… It is so aesthetically pleasing, I just had to snap a photo of the outside seating area. I tried to take a photo of the inside, but it was crowded and I couldn’t get a proper angle and good lighting to get a great photo. Next time I make my way there, I will indeed be taking photos. I really hope they will utilize the space on the second story of the shop though. It will give a lot more seating place than they have now. The more place to sit the more people. So Starbucks, get on it!
The inside was gorgeous, the low lighting gave it that relaxed homey feel with a mix of class and sophistication of a modern industrial space. The couches and two people seating tables are perfect for a group of friends and/or a date with your significant other or even taking yourself there to work or just to enjoy a coffee and a baked treat.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement and chilled vibes from people in-store and outside in the queue waiting to get inside to get their coffee or cold refresher drinks. The staff were warm, friendly and welcoming, very different to any other coffee shop I have been to and tried around Durban. They served sample drinks in small Starbucks cups, which I found really cute.
The baked treats looked and tasted just as amazing as I thought they would be. The cheesecake and chocolate cake were fresh, moist, and simply heaven on earth. I had a Toffee Nut Latte in a Venti (large) sized cup. It was out-of-this-world delicious. It was hot! Not warm like how most of these coffee shops make their coffee. It went down so well, that I actually began taking smaller sips to not finish it so quickly. The designs on the cup really made me get into the Christmas mood a lot more too.
All-in-all, my experience was everything. It lived up to the hype, and then some. I give the coffee shop, coffee, staff, and experience a 10/10. I will definitely be back in the future for my next caffeine fix. Well done guys, good luck for the future. I wish you success and love for the shop, because now that I have tasted Starbucks, I will not go back to any other coffee shop.
